Ferðaþjónusta bænda, Skipalæk

Welcome to Granny’s Kingdom!

Skipalækur is an Icelandic Guesthouse, one of the originals of Icelandic Farmholidays, located 2,5km from Egilsstadir, East Iceland.
We are open all year.

Skipalækur stands by lake Lagarfljót in the inlands of Fljótsdalshérað, an area of spectacular surroundings in summer as well as in its winter coat. Skipalækur is centrally located for visiting the East Fjords, Hallormsstaður forrest, the highlands of Snæfell and many more attractions.

Þórunn Sigurðardóttir and Grétar Brynjólfsson settled at Skipalækur in 1950 farming with sheep, cows, chickens, horses, cats and dogs. For a few winters a school was run at Skipalækur and in cold summers when farming got tough the forward thinking couple established a herring salting factory in Seyðisfjörður to survive. Skipalækur was always a home of many guests and after their three children had left home the second floor of their house was frequently filled with guests and travelers. In early 80s the word had spread and the loft of three rooms had become a small business. An additional A-shaped house by the lake Lagarfljót in 1985 marked the change from general farming at Skipalækur to a well established guesthouse.

Þórunn and Grétar were establishing members of ICELANDIC FARM HOLIDAYS, which is a growing and forward thinking association that has made a great difference to tourism in Iceland. Today Skipalækur is run in 12 houses and can sleep around 60 guests in accommodation of much diversity.

Þórunn Sigurðardóttir is at the age of 80 running Skipalækur.
